10,000 more patients on waiting lists die each year

A new investigation has discovered that the number of patients who die while languishing on NHS waiting lists has risen by at least 10,000 compared to five years ago.

The Sunday Express reports that 18,876 patients had died while on waiting lists five years ago, but that the figure had drastically increased to 29,553 this year, with a 250 per cent increase experienced in the South West, as the 652 patients who died waiting for treatment in 2013 rising to 2,289 patients last year.

Despite having a target to treat 92 per cent of patients within 18 weeks, the latest figures show that the health service is only meeting that target for 87.8 per cent of patients.
