The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has urged people to be cautious when buying sports supplements, after a review has been published investigating unauthorised medicines being sold as sports supplements.
The review was carried out by the MHRA’s Medicines Borderline section, and comes ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympics. It involved inviting 33 UK based companies to examine their product ranges, and take action to remove unauthorised medical products from the market.
The removed products were found to contain ingredients which caused a significant physiological effect and were regarded to be medical products.
The review identified a total of 69 unauthorised medicines being sold as sports supplements and 16 companies found to be selling the drugs.
