The specialist cancer hospital is expected to start treating patients in 2017 and will be built on the site of the historic grade II listed Royal masonic Hospital in Hammersmith, west London, which closed down ten years ago.
Proton beam therapy involves firing beams of proton at a tumour to destroy cancerous cells. The beams stop once they hit the cancerous cell, causing less damage to surrounding tissue than conventional radiotherapy, which makes treatment is especially well suited to children with brain tumours.
The NHS has also promised to build two proton beam therapy centres by 2018, one based in London and the other in Manchester.
