New figures have shown that more nurses and midwives are leaving the profession than joining it in the UK, the first time this has been the case since 2008.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has warned that this has produced an overall reduction in the numbers of nurses and midwives registered to work in the UK, with those registered in the UK falling by 1,783 to 690,773, in the year to March.
Between 2016 and 2017, 45 per cent more UK registrants left the register than joined it for the first time.
The NMC data also suggested that more nurses and midwives are leaving the register before retirement age, with a noticeable increase in those aged under 40 leaving. A recent NMC survey indicated that other reasons for leaving included working conditions, personal circumstances and disillusion with quality of care to patients.

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
