The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published a draft quality standard on vaccine uptake in children and young people, after figures have shown a fall in immunisation rates.
The standards include measures to drive up the numbers of under 19s who receive routine vaccinations, including: following up parents of children who miss immunisation appointments; enabling health visitors to check if children are up to date on their vaccinations during school visits; checking young offenders’ records to ensure they have received all their vaccinations; and offering immediate referrals for under-19 persons who are found to have missed a vaccination.
Professor Gillian Leng, deputy chief executive at NICE, estimated that around three million children and young people may have missed an MMR jab.
She said: “With so many children open to exposure we are at risk of a serious outbreak. This variation in uptake across the country is unacceptable.
“We now need peoples’ views to make sure we have set the right priorities to tackle this variation.”
The draft standards are now up for consultation, with registered stakeholders able to submit their views via the NICE website.

UK Building Regulations highlight toxic gas and smoke from layers of paint built up over multiple redecorations as a major cause of permanent ill health or death in a building fire.
Their concern rose with discovery the flame retardant paints most widely used paint along escape routes have been ones which to this day counter-productively use emission of heavy toxic gas to smother flames which rapidly spread along walls if layers of paint delaminate in a fire.
