Ben Gummer has warned that the NHS is at risk of cyber attacks as hacking continues to remain a clear and present threat.
Writing in The Telegraph, the minister for Cabinet said that ‘large quantities of sensitive data’ held by the NHS and the government is being targeted by hackers.
Gummer said: “The government has a clear responsibility to ensure its own systems are cyber secure. We hold and the rest of the public sector – including the NHS – hold large quantities of sensitive data and provide online services relied on by the whole country.”
The article was published as the government unveiled plans to spend £1.9 billion on enhancing Britain's cyber security. Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust recently announced that it was forced to shut down it's IT system and declare a ‘major incident’ after being hit by the virus.
