Figures uncovered by the Sunday People have shown the number children under the age of 14 being diagnosed with anorexia has more doubled in the last five years.
The statistics were provided by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) which found that 515 children aged 14 or younger had been diagnosed with anorexia in 2015-16. Among those diagnosed, 2 girls aged eight, eight girls aged nine and eight girls aged 10 had been diagnosed with the eating disorder.
Boys had also been admitted for treatment, including three aged 11 and five aged 12.
Tom Quinn, director of external affairs at the eating disorder charity Beat, commented: “We are concerned that more people are accessing this intensive treatment, reserved usually for the most severe cases, as it could indicate that outpatient treatment provision is not strong enough.
“While inpatient services should be available for those who need them it is vital that intervention is sought early and that local community services are funded appropriately.
“Accessing effective treatment as early as possible once symptoms appear gives individuals the best chance of full recovery.”
